But a single mistake can result in incorrect installation affecting its durability and endurance. Even builders and construction workers can make these mistakes if they are not experienced enough.

Don’t worry, let’s just break down the correct methods for installing a steel door, step by step.

But before the process, make sure you have all the tools and materials you need.

  • Measuring Tape – measure the height and width of the door frame to avoid fitting errors.
  • Spirit Level – to ensure the frame and door is correctly placed
  • Pencil – to mark the measurements
  • Screwdriver or Power Drill – to screw and fix the frame and hinges
  • Screws and anchors – to secure the door and door frame
  • Shims – small wooden or plastic pieces to help balance the door as they fill the gaps between the frame and the wall.
  • Foam or Sealant – to fill the empty spaces around the frame as it blocks air, moisture and noise from entering

Now, let’s get to work.

  1.     Measurements

Measure the space within the wall where the door frame will be secured (the rough opening), measure the door frame. The rough opening should be larger than the frame’s overall dimensions. Add about 1 inch to the width and ½ inch to the height of the frame. It is recommended to do a test fit to ensure if the frame aligns properly within the opening.

  1.     Position the Steel Door

Place the door into the frame. Make sure the door sits straight  with the use of a spirit level and closes properly.

  1.     Secure the frame

Ensure the wall frame is clean and mark the hinge spots. Properly secure the door frame inside the wall frame using shims to balance it from both sides. Anchor the frame to the wall with screws to prevent movement and ensure stability. Also, use a level to verify the vertical alignment.

  1.     Seal the Gaps

Apply foam or sealant around the frame to fill any gap. Let the sealant dry fully and install any necessary trim or finishes.

With these simple steps you can also become an expert at installing doors and avoid common mistakes. Always make sure all the tools and materials you use including the screws, plugs, hinges, sealant etc. are of top quality and rust proof.
